Ma Ke's 2007 collection, pictured below, is entitled wu yong which translates to "useless." Asked about the title she responds, "Does today's usefulness correspond to the values of tomorrow? I want to create things, which though they may appear useless today, are the bearers of values for the future....I hope people will free themselves of the opposition between the useful and the useless in order to find out about the object of their desire."

In creating the collection she worked exclusively with hand-loomed textiles, burying them in the ground at times.

The top five images are taken by amazing photographer Zhou Mi. Check out his website, his work is amazing.

27. Student Work ... Finally!

Originally, I set out to create this blog as a place where fashionphiles could all come together and rejoice at their communal coolness, but also and most importantly, as a showcase for student work - a place where fashion students, new designers, and people who simply like to create and sew could show the world the work they are proud of.

24. Belgium Style - the Antwerp Six

An innocuous mumu --- or is it?

Another Styleportation! This time we're off to Belgium, which caught the eye of the fashion world in the 1980's with a group of designers the London media termed the Antwerp Six. The Six are: Ann Demeulemeester, Marina Yee, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene and Dries Van Noten (clockwise from top left).

As badly as some of you (read: me) may want them to belong to some cool secret society together, their only real connection is they all went to the same school and graduated within a year of each other. Design-wise, they're worlds apart.

Of the six, I only knew of Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten so I decided to do a little researchy-roo to see what I could dig up on the others.

Let's get the bad news out of the way first. Dirk Bikkembergs does sporty-flashy stuff for guys - basically the exact thing Beckham might wear, but I might puke on.

Marina Yee actually sounds like the most avante garde of the bunch, but it is very, very hard to find info on her - her fashion work was sporadic and sparse and she went on to do other things having to do with art and installations and the like. She did design some cool t-shirts for DAA (Designers Against Aids) pictured below:

Pleasantly surprised by Walter VB and Dirk Van Saene, while their styles are decidedly different, both contain ample amounts of humor and whimsy.

Here's Van Bierendonck's latest:

His work has been described as a "crazy circus." It's definitely in-your-face.

By contrast Van Saene is far more subtle. I wasn't sure I liked him till I found the above blue dress. Turns out each of the sleeves has a Makonde face! How cool is that?

Nice! Same thing here: A dress that is very Martha Stewart and boring at first - but the back of the belt says, "It's too early for that dress!" and introduces a little secret only the wearer knows about.

It is hard finding images of Van Saene's stuff! I wish I could see more. While searching, tho, I dug up a lot of other up and coming Belgian designers so stay tuned for part 2 of this post - say, sometime in February. ;)

23. Drop-Crotch Outfit #1 Style

Well hello. Still skeptical about the drop-crotch --- OKAY. I have an idea. Let's not call them that. Let's call them... drop + crotch + harem + hammer = protchemer pants. At least for the time being till someone figures out a better name. --- so, protchemer pants - still not a fan? Here I am wearing a grey pair from Zara - backwards, mind you, with a thrifted sweater and flat, yes, flat boots, even though I said not to. Honestly, this would look better with heels but I just "rediscovered" these boots, so I'm playing with them.

Yay or nay?

I personally am a yay. As a person who has always had trouble finding pants that fit, the drop-crotch (okay - can we not call it that? And hammer pants - also a no. Harem pants? Puts feminists in a tizzy...what do we call these pants???) is a god-send - super-comfy and I personally think, quite elegant - IF worn the right way.

Some tips for wearing harem pants:

1) Wear heels. Get some comfy platforms. For me, its the only way I can pull them (the pants) off.
2) My favorite top combo to wear is a tight tank tucked in, plus a bolero jacket/sweater. The silhouette should be tight through the waist, but with enough body and structure around the shoulders/bodice to balance the baggy-ness of the pants.
3)If the pants are fitted around the ankle and calf, I think they look better.

Maybe I'll post some pics of my favorite drop-crotch outfits later...

My favorite part though - the colors and the pattern mix - leopard and plaid. I'm a convert.

21. Perfectly Accessorized Style

18. Street Style: Color and Me.

Well, I saw about 10 stylin' guys today, but I was determined to find a woman and finally, within a block of my final destination I did. I love her whole look, but esp. her colors. They remind me of this shoe by Pour la Victoire:

This is a fun project: I'm updating Joan of Arc's wardrobe for today. Interesting fact: the technicality she ended up being declared a heretic for was the fact that she wore male clothes! She was only 19 when she burned at the stake. Her story is really fascinating and the trial manuscript is incredible - she was a super intelligent and brave girl!

Yet another feature we'd like to have regularly here at SF Styleoscope is STYLE-PORTATION! where we visit another place or time for style inspiration. That's not all! If you love the look we will ALSO have a modern interpretation for you to rock at your convenience. You're welcome. We're pretty excited, too. :)

So today the inspiration is the fabulous Miao ladies who hail from China. Interestingly enough, the signature textile of the Miao people is a shiny deep eggplant color. It's dyed first in indigo, then in pig's blood to get the color. The shine comes from coating the cloth with egg whites, which also renders it waterproof.

Amazing, no? LOVE the headgear.

Been seeing a plethora of well-dressed men these days. It makes me happy. This gentleman demonstrates a KEY aspect of successful SF style: layering. No one can figure the weather out here, least of all me. We seem to be having summer in December. Hence the need to layer in such a way that your look looks complete no matter what stage of delayering you are at, as demonstrated above.

I literally leaped over a bench in the BART to get to this man and this is why:

I love seeing this kind of attention to detail and composition in an outfit. Turns out it was David's birthday (Happy B-day from SF Styleoscope!) suit (ha,ha), BUT he assured me he dresses like this on a daily basis. This makes me happier than I am comfortable admitting.

He works at Nordstrom's as a stylist, so if your style needs a pick-me-up, he is so your man.

7. Style Scoped Out: Doe

A feature we hope to have regularly on Styleoscope is Scoped Out, where we meet with stars of the SF fashion scene. Our first stop was the absolutely adorable Doe,

JEWEL TONED DRESSES

2. What is one item of clothing you could not live without?

One style – two versions. A Prairie Underground dress from two years ago. One is blue in size medium, the other is size small in dusty rose. It’s woven cotton with lace inserts and adjustable ruching detail at the hem. The bustline is fitted and it has a bustle effect at the rear. I’ve machine washed and dried these dresses countless times and they’re still in perfect condition.

Also, I could never live without oversize earrings and wedge boots (in the winter), wedge sandals when it’s warm.

* The two-bag look
* Vintage clothing that hasn’t been washed before wearing and is stained, smells bad, or both!

4. Where do you get your style inspiration?

* The doe girls
* The hair stylists who work at the countless salons in the neighborhood, particularly Edo - also located on the 600 block of Lower Haight
* My two little girls (6 and 2) – I like to dress them first and coordinate my outfits accordingly

5. What's your favorite place in the bay area?

I have a few –

Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park
Wholesale Flower Market at Halfmoon Bay
Japan Town

6. How would you describe San Francisco style?

Relaxed.

7. What was your favorite item of clothing as a child?

Oversized, cropped pink t-shirt screened w/ rows of puffy flamingos, from a tourist boutique called “Seaspray” in South Padre Island, Texas. I wore it tied at the side, usually with white short-shorts.

8. What's the weirdest/craziest piece of clothing you've ever worn?

Not one item, but a favorite outfit from fall 1998 – ankle-length green cord skirt by Nisa, rainbow striped v-neck top (pretty sure it was Esprit), purple patent high-tops w/ strawberry-print laces.

9. What are the top songs/bands you're loving right now?

San Quinn’s Hyphy version of “San Francisco” kills me. Anything by Mac Dre. Sean Hayes, the Mountain Goats. Dolly Parton remixes.

10. Can you please suggest a fun DIY project to make as holiday gifts/decoration?

Paperwhite bulbs – buy them now before they’re gone!

You’ll need: Pebbles, a small cup or forcing vase, and a narcissus bulb. Fill container with pebbles, push the bulb so it’s ½ covered with stones, and water just to the middle of the bulb. When the plant blooms, the flowers will smell amazing! Also, with proper care and storage, the bulbs will bloom year after year.

6. Haight and DeYoung Style

Not to keep harping on the DeYoung here, but for anyone with an interest in fashion in the Bay Area, I can't think of a more, ahem, productive way to spend the day than basking in the genius of YSL and then trotting over across the park to the Haight and scoring fabulous vintage finds while drinking many a creamy latte or chai or whatever your signature bev is. This past weekend the Goodwill had a everything is $2 sale!

5. Yves Saint Laurent at DeYoung

You probably already know this. What you may not know is that the DeYoung is the only US museum to show the retrospective and that there are well over 100 pieces of his work. The show will be there till early April. Go!

3. Style Blogs We Love

1. Sea of Shoes
Really great shoes (as implied) and really great job mixing high, low and vintage fashion. What is also unique about this blog is that both a girl and her mother pose, and there is never a single miss. They always look amazing and unique.

2. Garance Dore
French fashion at its absolute best. Consistently gorgeous shots and style.

3. Hel-Looks
Helsinki fashion at its absolute best. If you're looking for unique and thrifted, avant-garde and out of the box, this is fabulous. The accompanying interviews with the subjects are a must-read.

4. Kingdom of Style
DIY, incredibly unique and adventurous looks.

5. The Sartorialist
Everyone knows the Sart, so we're probably not telling you anything new, but we can't not put the Sart in our top 5.
